Painted Cooler

I have been keeping a secret for about a month and a half and I am finally able to spill! Patrick is in the Sigma Chi fraternity at our school. One of the traditions for the greek community (everyone, not just our school) is painted coolers. My best friend, Paige, was the one who really turned my interest. I decided to surprise him and make him one. It took a lot of time and planning.

I am also going to outline everything I did for it. I found it very difficult to do because there was no articles or posts that I could find that outlined and detailed every part of it, so I hope this one fills the gap! Here it goes:

Supplies:

-acrylic paint

-krylon plastic fusion spray paint (white)

-mod podge & new brush just for this (do not use an old one, it will pull any paint bits left over into your new work- designate a brush just for this)

-minwax (new brush- same as above reason)

-paint brushes

-paint pens (optional, but make life much easier)

-a mixing space for the paints

-frog tape (painters tape may also work but I have not tried it)

-patience

Before you do anything to your cooler- figure out your design. I used the Cooler Connection to find images and inspiration (as well as some tips.) I drew out my design on paper and printed off the images I liked so I could refer to them if need be.

I began the cooler process by taking my cooler and taping off the inside so no paint would get inside (using frog tape and newspaper.) I also taped the wheels off so they would not get paint on them. I then took the white krylon plastic spray paint and began covering all of the surfaces (except the bottom and inside.) It took me about three cans to cover it completely. Be sure to allow dry time in between each coat. Also, do not spray too close- you will have dripping paint if you do.

After the cooler was all white I decided to paint the top first. I started with the letters. In order to get them perfect I printed off the greek letters (one per piece of paper) colored the area (on the back side of the paper, using pencil) that I wanted the outline to transfer, and then placed the paper on the cooler top (ink side up.) From here take your pencil and outline the front, the lead from the pencil should transfer. I did not press very hard because I did not want the lead to show through my paint. I then used a small brush to paint my letters. Then I painted the background. Be sure to go over everything two-three times. I then used a paint pen to outline my letters and make them pop. Let dry for 24 hrs. Use mod podge to seal the top. It will appear white when it goes on, but dries clear. Paint it on just like paint- use a good amount, but don’t go crazy, too much and it will not dry clear.

For the painted sides this was the basic way I went about it. Be sure to keep in mind, lighter colors over darker colors are not always easy and may not cover the whole way.

For the Vineyard Vines side (my favorite side) I tried a few different things but what worked best (and what I ended up using) was this:

-carefully measure out the side of your cooler and figure out what size squares you want. I used 3″ x 3″

-pick your pattens (I am going post all of the patterns I used on here to make it easy for you all to use them! I will make a Facebook album- expect that in the next two days, I will post an update about it too.)

UPDATE: Here are the prints!

-create word documents using the patterns (see image below) and print out & cut out

-apply mod podge directly to the cooler and carefully put your images (ink facing you) onto the cooler. Keep in mind, once they touch, it is difficult to move. Make sure you have allowed a good amount of time for the ink to dry after printing, otherwise it will run. I let this dry for 24 hrs. before putting a coat of mod podge over to seal it. I eventually applied 3-5 coats.

These were the basic steps I used for placing images and painting. The entire cooler at the end got 3-6 coats of mod podge. Then about 3 coats on minwax to seal it all. I may decide to put additional sealer on.

Here is the rest of the cooler and a few close up shots:

The whale and skip jack and actually stickers that I used-I am too much of a perfectionist to have them not be exact!

These are my two favorite bow ties on the cooler!

Okay so I am not a professional, but I think it is pretty good for a first cooler! I hope to do a few smaller ones this Summer as well.

Life’s Short. Eat Cookies.

I am a firm believer in the saying “Life’s Short. Eat Cookies.” My favorite (and always will be my favorite) are the classic chocolate chip cookies! I love trying recipes to find the absolute best one out there. Recently I came across one on pinterest (sadly I do not have the original source- but this was not my recipe, just sharing!)

Here it is:

1 cup butter (two sticks)

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar (I used light brown)

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 1/4 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 12 oz. bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Cream together the butter and sugar. Then add in the eggs and vanilla. Slowly add flour, salt and baking soda. Add chocolate chips. Take a spoonful for yourself!

I cooked mine in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes. The first batch (without refrigerator time) came out yummy but a little flat. I took the dough out the next day and baked again, this time 350 degrees for 10 minutes, and they came out thick and fluffy!

Here are some pictures taken along the way:

Starting to look like cookie dough!

Tempting…

Warning: leaving dough unattended can, and will, result in missing pieces- at least in my home it does!

This was the first batch- flat but really yummy!

The second batch (after being refrigerated for 24 hrs.) came out 3x as thick!

What is your favorite cookie recipe?

Review : Francesca Joy Palm Beach

I had been looking at Francesca Joy for about 5 months, admiring her gorgeous and original designs. I follow her on twitter and she tweeted a 50% off coupon for her entire shop. It was a crystal clear sign that I needed to purchase one of her bags. I have been using my large tote a ton and am getting my moneys worth out of it for sure! It is the first beach bag that actually fits everything I need want to bring!

I even use it when I nanny because it is big enough to fit all of our towels, toys, sunscreen, change of clothes, snacks and everything else they want to bring to the beach.

Now a little something for you! I talked to the designer and she was kind enough to extend a coupon code for all of you! It will give you free shipping on her shop: freeshipblogger

What will you get?

Here are some pictures of my bag (I won’t show the inside because it is filled with all of the above and, sand.)

Love that she can add your initials to make it even more personal!

The back of the bag has just a little something to keep it fun!

The bag is huge: 23″ long, 14″ height

She has more than just great beach bags though- her fabulous store includes: ties, bow ties, sandals, wristlets, make-up bags, fold over notes, and iPhone cases! All in original prints and designs.

Head over to her shop to check out her designs and pick something totally unique of your own.

Re-prep, Reuse, Re-wear

I have found two pages on Facebook recently and they are quickly becoming a frequent visit for me. I actually made my first purchase of  a Lilly dress that I had been searching for (new with tags!!) I am beyond excited. The first page I found was Perfectly Preppy Resale. They accept Lilly Pulitzer, Vineyard Vines, J. Crew, Jack Rogers, Tory Burch, Elizabeth McKay, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Coach, Cole Haan, Kate Spade, Fornash and Stella & Dot. People put their pictures onto the wall and tag it “perfectly preppy resale” from here people email you (using your paypal email address) to purchase. It is very similar to how ebay works, but without costs for the sellers. All of their rules can be found on their Facebook page.

Re-Lilly group was my second find. As their name would suggest, they are a place just for Lilly lovers! For them, you email the photo of the item with size, price and paypal email (as well as a description), and they post it to the album with the proper size. I find it easier to search on their site because it is by size. I made my first purchase from them and am waiting for it to come later this week. The seller was wonderful and accommodated my time-sensitive shipping needs (thank you again if you are reading!) For sellers, it is $1 to list the item and you pay this via paypal. It is again very similar to ebay, but I think easier for sellers and buyers. Again, visit their Facebook page for all of the details (and to check out what they have!)

You can be sure I will be listing some of my things very soon- I have some great pieces never worn or worn once that will be up for grabs soon!!

Monograms and Compliments

Yesterday I wore my large gold monogram necklace. After the third compliment and multiple people saying “excuse me, but can I ask you something? Where did you get your necklace I absolutely love it!” I knew I needed to share it with all of you. I have actually featured it before in the grad gifts post, but here is my actual necklace and where it came from.

Here is how I paired it for my Birthday Dinner (yes, I got it for my Birthday- but I opened it that morning so I could wear it later!)

My mom also has the necklace in her monogram, we both wore it that night:

This is a great picture to show the necklace because it features a longer area to clip the necklace to change the length. I wore a boat neck and decided to wear my necklace longer. My mom wore a v-neck and wore her necklace on the shorter side to make sure it was seen.

Here is a close up of mine:

The necklaces came from Moon & Lola. I have to say I have seen some other monogram necklaces and they have not turned out as well as the ones from Moon & Lola. This is my go-to necklace and I sometimes don’t know how I ever got along without it!

Also, this is the large, but it comes in mini, small and medium as well. I have yet to see a mini, but I think it would be a great necklace for a more subtle monogram.

Hot, Hot, Hot

The past two days have brought great beach days, but very hot and humid temperatures! Today was a record breaker in Boston, and as I drove to RI, my thermometer said 101! I know I am always looking for ways to stay cool, here are a few tips for you too!

1. I cannot stress this enough- Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! (I sound like my mom, but she is so right!) Especially in the Summer, try and drink a nice cold water every hour! Stay away from caffeine and alcohol, they will dehydrate you.

2. You will never find me on a beach without a baseball cap or sun hat either on my head or in my bag. It is so important to protect your scalp and face from the sun and a hat is a great way to do this. p.s. sunglasses are another must!

3. A light colored cotton tunic is great for the beach. If it is windy you won’t be chilly, but when the sun is beating down, it is a nice way to protect your skin from the sun. Cotton is a very breathable fabric so you won’t feel as though you are suffocating.

4. If you’ve been good…

5. Especially at the beach, always bring swimwear! I usually have it in my car just in case. You never know when you may need to cool off!

6. Always wear sunscreen, at least spf 30! When I was a lifeguard, I used spf 70 everyday to protect my skin and applied it frequently. Remember, how you treat your skin now, will determine how healthy it is later!

What are your tips for staying cool in the Summer?
