Avoiding the Freshman 15

We have all heard about the not so mysterious freshman 15, and we all vow to ourselves that it will not happen. Recently my roommate told me about the alleged sophomore 20, I was clearly concerned the moment I heard. Last year, in order to make sure I did not fall ill to the freshman 15, I decided to do a triathlon challenge my school has at our fitness centers.

The challenge went like this:

Pick three sports/activities

Stairmaster 3,500 flights

Swimming 20 miles

Running 75 miles

Upright Bikes 175 miles

Recumbent Bike 175 miles

Elliptical 75 miles or 110,000 steps

Aerobics 30 hours (1 hr. of physical activity- i.e. tennis, racquetball, basketball, soccer, workout DVD etc.)

After each workout we would submit our hours and they would post our progress to the gym wall (our name with our three sports and a progress bar they would color in). We completed our three activities in a semester.

It was a great way to jump start a workout routine at school and it kept me motivated. I know not all schools do this challenge, but it would be super easy to make a poster with your roommates, friends, people on your floor etc. and start your very own triathlon challenge.

Another great way to stay motivated is to do a work out class with a friend, then there is no way of getting out not going when someone else is counting on you to be there.

p.s. I beat the freshman 15 and I swear it was due to the triathlon challenge.

Painting Lilly Pulitzer

A few weeks before I left for school I went on a crafting phase. Part of this phase was painting Lilly Pulitzer prints on various materials and items. I was asked how I painted the print and so I decided that there were maybe a few more of you ladies who would want to know. I, by no means, am an expert at this, but this is the “technique” I used.

This was the tissue box cover I painted. I began by painting the background white.

I started with a medium pink color and did the general shape of the flowers.

I then went back over with the next color or pink.

Then again with light pink.

I added the darkest color of green for leaves.

Adding a light, almost lime green gives the leaves good dimension.

The second to last step was adding the background color, you don’t have to be exact, in fact most Lilly prints have a little bit of a hand painted look to them.

Finally I added white to the flowers to give them the shape and dimension I wanted.

On one of the sides I decided to paint my monogram. I printed my monogram out and traced it onto the side of the box, then painted over the pencil with white.

I also put two layers of mod podge on to keep the paint from chipping (truth be told I could probably use two more coats). The whole project was very easy and fairly relaxing. Happy Painting!

Review : Lucite Tray

Pea Pod Paper & Gifts sent me a Nico & Lala lucite tray to check out.

I love that it is reversible because you can have two completely different looks. My only complaint is that there is a part of the insert that is exposed, so keeping this anywhere that it might get wet is a no-go (a solution to this would be laminating the inserts.)

It is a good little tray to keep jewelry in that you wear all the time and want to grab and go.

Outfitted for the first day

For the first day of school (yes I still plan my outfit) I like to usually go for something that is comfortable but still put together. A casual dress with a bold necklace is a great way to have fun with an outfit! I love the pop of color you get from the bag, and the pointed toe helps elongate your leg, because lets face it, who doesn’t want their leg to look long and lean?

DIY Lucite Organizer

After I did the lucite tray, I couldn’t resist doing an organizer too! This was a much different process, but it was just as fun and easy.

I purchased a clear plain organizer at home goods. I then measured it and printed out a pattern that fit the size of the organizer (with a touch of room to spare.)

The pattern I picked (I found this searching on google, it is not my own design)

Organizer, pre-DIY

I flipped the organizer over and brushed mod podge on the bottom, I then placed the pattern on the bottom and used my hand to smooth it out. Let dry and place two-three coats of mod podge over that to seal it and make it waterproof.

Finally, let it completly dry and put it to work!

Welcome Back Dinner

Last night, my parents arrived home from their vacation, they were starved when they walked in the door {so much so there are no pictures of the final products of the dinner I made!}I will share some pictures of what I made when there was still something to take a picture of!

I decided to try a recipe for stuffed shells, it was delicious! I made a few changes to it but kept pretty close to what it was.

I started with fresh chives from our garden.

The stuffing for the shells (yum!)

I used Jumbo Shells, so with the amount of filling in the recipe it filled about 15 shells.

I also used someone else’s homemade sauce…

Sprinkles Cupcakes are the next best thing when there is no time for homemade!

I used an ice cream scoop so they would all be the same size {thanks for the tip Grandma!}

I frosted them with homemade cream cheese frosting and using a frosting kit my mom got, made it so they looked like roses on the top {well my attempt at it anyways}

I also made chicken cutlets using an italian style bread crumb mixed with grated cheese and cooked in extra virgin olive oil and garlic!

The dinner was a success and just what they needed after a long day of traveling!

p.s. I wore a pink apron  to make sure my outfit stayed free of stains, and well it was pink.
